Sweetshrub, also known as Carolina allspice, is a deciduous shrub native to  southeastern US. It is valued for its distinctive dark-red flowers and fragrant, fruity scent. The plant smells like pineapple, strawberry, or banana, and it is known for its multi-stemmed, dense, rounded form. It is a low-maintenance plant that can be used in various landscaping applications, including shrub borders, hedgerows, and naturalized gardens.

While sweetshrub is not considered edible, it is important to note that the plant contains toxic alkaloids, particularly in its seeds and fruit pods, making it unsafe for consumption.

Thrives in part-shade, making an excellent understory choice. Uses include cut flowers, potpourri, ecological benefits (attracts pollinators) and for a wonderful aromatic.
