Small to medium-sized nitrogen-fixing tree, typically reaching 20–40 feet in height. They grow rapidly, around 2 5 feet per year under favorable conditions, and are relatively short-lived, averaging 10–30 years. The tree is famous for its pink, fluffy, pompom-like flowers with silky stamens, which bloom in late spring to summer. Fragrant blossoms attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.
Produce flat, brown, bean-like seed pods; seeds contain a neurotoxin, which can be harmful if ingested by pets or livestock. Young leaves & flowers edible to humans.
The inner bark and flowers have been traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine to relieve anxiety, stress, depression, and insomnia. Active compounds include saponins, flavonoids, and lignans, which may contribute to the anxiolytic effects
