Blueberries love acidic soil and need a companion blueberry plant to produce a better yield. Ideally, it’s best to get at least 2 different varieties!

Some differences between Rabbiteye (Vaccinium corymbosum) & Highbush (Vaccinium virgatum):

• Highbush blueberry fruits are usually larger. The fruit is juicier, with a thinner skin.

• Rabbiteye are a little tougher but tend to be a little sweeter.

• Rabbiteye are a bit more tolerant of drought and less-than-ideal pH.

• Typically, highbush ripen about 3-4 weeks earlier than rabbiteye.

Our advice? Plant both. You will have blueberries almost the entire summer and you’ll get to try a variety of different flavors!

The varieties we have in stock tend to change quite often, but some examples have been:

• Rabbiteye: Brightwell, Powder Blue, Ochlockonee, Alapaha

• Highbush: Sweet Crisp, Climax, Legacy, Emerald

• Pink Lemonade: a hybrid, pink blueberry that pollinates both Rabbiteye and Highbush

We also periodically carry Florida’s native Blueberry (Vaccinium darrowii). This is a low-growing bush with small leaves & berries. It does well in sandy soil and full-part sun. It also retains its leaves in winter, which is unusual for blueberry bushes. The leaves actually turn a red hue and create a beautiful ornamental plant.
